Requirements
Regular Admission Requirements: The Graduate Record Exam(GRE) is required of all applicants with the exception of those
applying to accountancy, for whom the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required
instead. Official scores will need to be received directly from the Educational Testing Services.
Admission to the Dual Degree Programs: For applicants to the PhD/MBA program, both the GRE and GMAT tests are required. For
applicants to the MD/PhD program, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is
required, but not the GRE.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE): The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000,
Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6000. Usually these examinations are taken in the
fall of the applicant's undergraduate senior year. Information is available on
the web at www.gre.org.
- GRE Subject
Test: Applicants to the master's program in English are now required
to take the GRE subject test starting with fall 2006 admission.The subject test
is recommended but not required for Chemistry, Physics, and
Psychology. The other Reynolda Campus departments and Bowman Gray Campus programs
do not require the Subject Test.
Graduate
Management Admission Test (GMAT): Applicants to the master of science in accountancy
program are required to take the GMAT. The GRE is not required for this program. The GMAT is administered by Pearson VUE (www.pearsonvue.com).
Medical
College Admissions Test (MCAT): This test is required for all persons applying
to the MD/PhD program. The MCAT is administered by the Educational Testing Service
(www.aamc.org).
Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): International students (those who did not graduate
from colleges or universities within the U.S. and whose principal language of
instruction was not English) must submit EITHER the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) scores or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum total score on the TOEFL is 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based
test), and 79-80 (internet-based). The minimum score on the IELTS is 6.5.
- A score comparison chart for the TOEFL's three testing methods (internet-based, computer-based, and paper-based) is attached.
The on-line application for programs in the biomedical sciences will only allow users to enter computer based test scores. Please use the attached chart to find computer score equivalents if you took the paper based or internet based test.
- The
TOEFL bulletin of information and registration form can be obtained at American
embassies and consulates, offices of the United States Information Service, United
States educational commissions and foundations abroad, and at bi-national centers.

Administrations of TOEFL are coordinated with the GRE and are available in most
countries. Correspondence should be initiated at least three months before the
testing date.
- IELTS
is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University
of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. The IELTS is available at 270 test centers worldwide.
