Each applicant must submit the following items to the Graduate School. Materials should not be sent to the department or program.
 1. Application Form
 2. Statement of Interest
 3. Three Recommendation Forms
4. Official Transcripts
 5. Application Fee
 6. Signature Page
 7. Official Test Scores
 8. Special Departmental Requirements

1. Application Form (on-line or paper). All application forms must be prepared carefully and thoughtfully. For Bowman Gray applicants applying on-line, a confirmation that the application was received will be sent when the application is submitted. For Reynolda Campus on-line applicants, a confirmation will be mailed when the application fee has been received.

2. Statement of Interest (as attachment to on-line application or paper). Indicate your area of special interest within the program you have selected. Also, indicate your career plans as you perceive them at present.

3. Recommendation Forms. Three (3) recommendations (forms are required; letters may be attached) must be in a sealed envelope that is signed on the back flap. The forms provided should be completed by persons who have personal knowledge of your academic qualifications. Any letter of recommendation must be accompanied by a fully completed form bearing the appropriate signatures.

4. Official Transcripts. Submit one official transcript from each college or university you have attended. Each transcript must be in a sealed institutional envelope and signed on the back flap. If the bachelor's or master's degree has not been conferred, it will be necessary for you to have a final transcript sent upon graduation. The transcripts sent must be originals, carrying the official seal of the college or university. Photocopies are not accepted.

5. Application Fee. For every program application there is a non-refundable fee ($45 for domestic, $55 for international, and $35 for the Liberal Studies program). This fee should be included with the application packet for the program and mailed to the appropriate address listed below (see Mailing Address). The fee is payable by money order in U.S. currency or a check drawn on a U.S. bank. Cash and credit cards are not accepted. No application will be processed until the fee is received.

6. Signature Page. Applicants using the on-line application process must submit this page.

7. Official Test Scores. The Graduate Record Exam is required of all applicants with the exception of those applying to accountancy, for whom the Graduate Management Admission Test is required instead. The TOEFL or IELTS test is required for international applicants whose native language is not English.

8. Special Departmental Requirements. For the four departments listed below, please include the following material with your application packet.

  • English Department - requests a writing sample of approximately ten pages in length. Applicants are also required to take the GRE subject test by the application dealine.
  • Communication Department - requests that applicants submit a writing sample, in English, to demonstrate the applicant's written communication abilities.
  • Health and Exercise Science Department (HES) - requests a one page resume and a one page statement outlining the applicant's interest in exercise science, reasons for applying to the program, and a description of your future goals. Although not a requirement for admission, the department highly recommends that applicants schedule an interview with the HES Graduate Program Director in December, January, or February.
  • Education - Applicants to the MTF Program for Foreign Language must contact the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) at www.actfl.org to set up an Oral Proficiency Interview. Please include your ACTFL Certificate with your application materials that are submitted to the Graduate School. All other programs (including MTA's, VIF and MTF's in other content areas) do not need to contact ACTFL.
Interviews
Although not required by all programs, personal interviews are encouraged and may be specified as a requirement for some programs. Interviews may be arranged by contacting program directors. Interviews are required for qualified applicants to programs of study on the Bowman Gray Campus (biomedical sciences), for the MD/PhD Program, and for the PhD/MBA program.

Applications to More Than One Program
Persons wishing to make application to programs of study in the biomedical sciences are free to submit an application to more than one program of study (if an offer of admission is made from more than one graduate program, only one offer may be accepted). For applications to more than one program, the following materials are required:
 1. application for each program
2. application fee for each program
3. personal statement for each program
4. three recommendations for each application submitted

The applicant is only required to submit one official transcript from each university or college attended and one official GRE and/or TOEFL or IELTS report.

Applicants to more than one program in the arts and sciences are required to submit a complete and separate application packet for each program.  If an applicant is offered admission by more than one program, only one offer may be accepted.

Notification of Application Results
Applications must be completed prior to review by the respective program. The Dean or Associate Dean of the Graduate School shall notify the applicant whether or not admission has been granted. The institution reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant without assignment of reasons. Admission to the Graduate School does not constitute admission to candidacy for a graduate degree.
